About this book

Language: Spanish with English introduction

Nowhere in the world are freshwater fishes more diverse than in Neotropical streams. Niches such as wood-eating and blood sucking exist nowhere else on the planet than in the Neotropics, and nearly all niches occupied by freshwater fishes elsewhere are occupied by fishes in the Neotropics. The bewildering array of form reaches its apex in the Amazon, but peripheral basins are quite interesting as well, and often harbor endemic taxa of great interest.

The freshwater fish fauna of Western Ecuador is not nearly as diverse as that of the Amazon, but there are certainly some oddities among the fishes. The biota of western Ecuador and other trans-Andean regions contains many endemic genera that are unusual when compared to their Amazonian relatives. This guide provides keys, descriptions, and photographs of fishes of the region, and serves as a guide to future studies.
