About this book

Language: Japanese with scientific nomenclature

This series gives an unprecedented insight into the fascinating world of ancient creatures, and tickles and awakens the reader's intellectual curiosity.

The fourth installment deals with organisms from the Carboniferous (358.9 ± 0.4 to about 298.9 ± 0.15 million years ago) and Permian (298.9 ± 0.15 to 252.17 ± 0.06 million years ago) periods. During the Carboniferous period, much of the land had a wet tropical climate all year round, and some of the largest forests the world has ever seen grew during this period. Insects, which had appeared in the previous era, shared the land with amphibians that had swaggered onto land in lush and dense jungle filled with tree ferns. As the Earth headed towards a period of glaciation the Carboniferous came to an end. During the Permian the two supercontinents of Gondwana and Laurussia collided, forming the supercontinent Pangaea.

These two periods preceded the era of the dinosaurs. What happened on Earth during these two ages? This volume looks at two centuries of fossil finds to sketch the history of life on earth during this time.
