About this book

Language: Japanese with scientific nomenclature

This series gives an unprecedented insight into the fascinating world of ancient creatures, and tickles and awakens the reader's intellectual curiosity.

This third installment in this series deals with the creatures of the Devonian period, 419.2 ± 3.2 to about 358.9 ± 0.4 million years ago. From fossils we know that a lot of fish appeared during this period. Sharks were the hunters of the sea, and bony fishes started to appear. The water underent a transformation into a "big fish era". At the same time, insects finally appeared on land. This volume focuses foremost on the fish diversity during this era though, as the Devonian became the cornerstone of vertebrate evolution. Based on the latest research results, their diversification is treated, but changes to the terrestrial ecosystem are also covered.
