A detailed account of acoustic and optical signals in Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans includes, in Appendix 1, competition between chicks to join groups of young birds. Distant communication of Corn Crake Crex crex is also examined and there are accounts of the singing behaviour of Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis and Great Tit Parus major. Based on the author's expertise and numerous publications on this topic, sections on wheatears Oenanthe spp. and Bay-backed Shrike Lanius vittatus are also included.
