So far in this series, the author has treated one or even two geological periods in one volume. But for the cretaceous there is so much information available that is has been spread over two volumes, this volume focusing on the second half of the cretaceous. This volume puts the spotlight on the creatures that lived in the Americas, which was dominated, especially in the public imagination, by the large carnivorous dinosaurs

Many more marine organisms came into existence during the cretaceous; now-extinct fish, giants shark and, finally, the strongest of marine reptiles, mosasaurs, appeared, which had a distinctive appearance. As such, a separate chapter for the ocean has been included.

これまで当シリーズでは、1冊に1つ、もしくは2つの地質時代をテーマにしてきました。
しかし「白亜紀」はお伝えしたい情報が多いため、上下の2巻構成となりました。
上巻には「おおむね」白亜紀前半、下巻には「おおむね」白亜紀後半の情報をまとめたものの、くっきりとした線引きはなく、上巻にも白亜紀後半、下巻にも白亜紀前半の情報を盛り込んでいます。

本書は、シリーズ第8作目『白亜紀の生物 下巻』。
下巻では、とくに南北アメリカ大陸に生息した生物たちにスポットライトが当たります。
白亜紀といえば、やはり恐竜。
そして、その恐竜のなかでも圧倒的な存在感を放つ“あの”肉食恐竜が、本書でついに登場。
さまざまな写真とともに紹介される“あの”肉食恐竜。
