About this book

Language: English

Nashik district in Maharashtra, India, has been blessed with more than 340 species of birds found in forests, grasslands and wetlands, out of which 27 birds are listed as threatened bird species (Birdlife International). There are three lBA’s (Important Bird Areas) in Nashik district viz. Nandurmachmeshwar wetland, Gangapur dam and adjoining grasslands and Ojhar grasslands. A good opportunity exists for formation of new lBA’s viz. Borgad Conservation Reserve, Anjaneri fort with its steady population of over 60 long-billed vultures and the wetlands of Waghod darn. Birds at Nashik District: A Conservation Guide contains photographs of 251 species of birds exclusively and mostly photographed within the district and serves as an authentic record of their presence.

Grassland and forest birds have experienced a major decline in the last few years mainly due to habitat loss and poaching. Even Gangapur dam (wetland) is facing an eminent threat of being disturbed by developmental activities. The Nature Conservation Society of Nashik (NCSN) has been working vigorously in the field of wildlife conservation since last two decades in Nashik district, in association with the Forest Department, and has been actively campaigning for the cause door to door, village to village and finally alter a decade has been successtul in restoration of natural habitat and preventing poaching of birds in certain forest areas of Nashik district to a great extent. This was mainly possible due to co-operation ot the tribals and their children who were individually educated about conservation through various activities.

The story of the formation of Borgad Conservation Reserve (BCR), the first conservation reserve in Maharashtra is also briefly narrated. In the Forests of Nashik district there are no protected areas and promoting small pockets like BCR would go a long way in promoting wildlife conservation.

This is not just an ordinary book with information on birds but also depicts the struggle our avian fauna is facing to survive in today’s world of development. A separate section of Conservation Notes has been included, showing events and activities carried out jointly to help preserve birds and our environment.
