Are there cupules present in the Bennettitales? The production of cupules in the Bemiettitales has been an ongoing debate for the last century with no clear winner. New fossil finds and reinterpretation of older discoveries show the existence of cupules in at least some Bennettitalean forms.
lt is well known that fossils can sometimes be misinterpreted as to structure due to their two dimensional form and as such misidentified as to taxonomic placement. This book gives a vivid example of just such an occurrence.
The cupulate cone Bethella lowenii gen. et sp. nov., of the Bennettitales is described. During a morphological comparative search other similar fossil forms were found in various unrelated taxonomic placements. These fossils are brought together in an easy to understand format. Test your own ability to three dimensionalize a two dimensional fossil form. Slab associated and site associated leaf forms are also discussed.
A great resource for students or researchers studying general fossil form as well as specifics in Bennettitales ovulate cone morphology.
