The clear and dynamic page layout of this identification guide provides quick access to key criteria. Identification is done using a systematic key with drawings on the left-hand pages and / or using arrows on the photographic plates of the males and the females on the right-hand pages.

General chapters on morphology, biology, ecology, and habitats at the beginning of the book provide valuable information to learn more about these fascinating insects and to facilitate their field research.

This book illustrates and presents all the species and subspecies known today. It contains over 700 colour photos and over 600 drawings, as well as distribution maps. Observation periods, types of habitats, altitudes and possible confusion species are indicated. Also, 155 oscillograms visualize Orthoptera songs that are difficult to hear or recognize by ear.

An audio CD containing 222 orthopteran vocalisations in mp3 format is included.
