About this book

The 2012 edition of the Orkney Bird Report includes full colour photographs and a vast array of information on species, sightings, nesting habitats and locations. 2012 was full of the variety that is expected from Orkney's birds. Amongst the many satisfying and enjoyable features of the year were the Iceland Gull invasion, Orkney's first Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, a much appreciated Roller, a bumper autumn for the American waders, an excellent breeding season for Hen Harriers and Short-eared Owls and a good number of calling Corncrakes.

North Ronaldsay Bird Observatory had another superb year, with a host of delights such as multiple Olive-backed Pipits and Lanceolated Warblers, along with Paddyfield Warbler, Booted Warbler, Western Bonelli's Warbler and a gorgeous male Black-headed Bunting.
