About this book

This is the story, in word and image, of the South Georgia Heritage Trust Habitat Restoration Project fieldwork that took place on South Georgia in three phases (in 2011, 2013 and 2015), baiting every inch of rodent-infested land on the island. Much work remains to be done in the coming years to check if every rodent has indeed gone and Reclaiming South Georgia has been created to raise funds for this crucial monitoring phase of the project. Every photo in Reclaiming South Georgia was taken by a member of Team Rat, and the story is a personal account by Project Director Professor Tony Martin of the challenges and triumphs involved in routing the furry invaders.

It may seem a little unfair on innocently breeding rats that their entire species is eradicated from this place. However, the value far outweighs the action because the non-endemic rat, introduced by sailors and whalers, was causing the virtual extinction of many endemic species. It's a very well-written book about a huge conservation project to conserve the fragile and unique island of South Georgia. You don't need to read my words to appreciate the impact on nature when invasive species are introduced to natural habitats. It's a great book about a remarkable project. Well done Team Rat.
