The Lower Oder Valley, on the border with Poland in the German state of Brandenburg, is one of the most bird species-rich areas of Germany. In the National Park alone 293 species have been recorded so far; 160 species belong are regular breeding birds. Winfried Dittberner – active since 1965 in the area – describes the avifauna of the Lower Oder Valley National Park from the beginnings of ornithological research in the area up to the present.

During winter floods large areas of water form that are used by thousands of roosting and migratory birds from northern and eastern Europe. Nordic geese, cranes and whooper swans, but also up to 40 Sea Eagles enrich the landscape at this point. During the spring migration, several thousand dabbling ducks, mainly Eurasian wigeons, northern pintails, northern shovelers and Eurasian teals inhabit the flooded meadows. There are good observation possibilities for, amongst others, whiskered terns, white-winged terns,  black terns, ruffs and courting snipe, and in the Carr trees bluethroats and penduline tits. Often the singing of thrush nightingales is heard.

On a map with accompanying text, the most important observation points in the National Park are listed. A well-developed network of cycle and hiking trails allows both ornithologists and any other interested observer of nature to experience the variety of bird life, which has its specific features in every season. As additional highlights the cranes in autumn and the whooper swans in winter are mentioned.

The research results of 50 years are clearly displayed through charts, distribution maps and tables. Exclusively photos taken in the field round out the picture of the bird population in the national park. This book is the most comprehensive monograph on the avifauna of the Lower Oder Valley National Park.

Das Untere Odertal ist eines der vogelartenreichsten Gebiete Deutschlands. Allein im Nationalpark wurden bisher 293 Arten nachgewiesen; 160 Arten gehören zu den regelmäßigen Brutvögeln. Winfried Dittberner – seit 1965 im Gebiet tätig – beschreibt die Vogelwelt des Nationalparks Unteres Odertal von den Anfängen der ornithologischen Forschung im Gebiet bis in die Gegenwart.

In der Zeit der Winterflutungen entstehen große Wasserflächen, die von tausenden Rast- und Durchzugsvögeln aus Nord- und Osteuropa genutzt werden. Nordische Gänse, Kraniche und Singschwäne, aber auch bis 40 Seeadler bereichern dann die Landschaft. Während des Frühjahrszuges bevölkern einige Tausend Gründelenten, vor allem Pfeif- und Spießenten, Löffel- und Krickenten die überschwemmten Wiesen. Gute Beobachtungsmöglichkeiten bestehen u. a. für Weißbart-, Weißflügel-, Trauerseeschwalben, Kampfläufer und balzende Bekassinen, in den Bruchwaldgehölzen für Blaukehlchen und Beutelmeisen. Häufig ist der Gesang des Sprossers zu hören.

Auf einer Karte mit Begleittext sind die wichtigsten Beobachtungsplätze im Nationalpark aufgeführt. Ein gut erschlossenes Rad- und Wanderwegenetz lässt sowohl den Ornithologen als auch jeden anderen interessierten Naturbeobachter die Vielfalt der Vogelwelt, die in jeder Jahreszeit ihre Besonderheiten aufweist, erlebbar werden. Als zusätzliche Höhepunkte werden z. B. im Herbst die Kranich- und im Winter die Singschwan-Tage angeboten.

Die Forschungsergebnisse aus 50 Jahren sind übersichtlich durch Diagramme, Verbreitungskarten und Tabellen dargestellt. Ausschließlich in der Feldarbeit angefertigte Fotos runden das Bild über die Vogelwelt im Nationalpark ab. Mit diesem Buch liegt die umfangreichste Monografie zur Vogelwelt des Nationalparks Unteres Odertal vor.
