Mires are fascinating, diverse, complicated to use and sensitive to changes. They characterize large landscapes in Brandenburg and Berlin and have been used by humans for centuries, with only about two percent of the former surface in its natural state..

Usage requirements for drained peatlands are increasingly competing with one another. Mires – like no other landscape type in Central Europe – are symbolic of the juxtaposition of the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of management, the need for trade-offs of ecosystem services and the need to solve usage conflicts.

More sustainable use, assigning protection or managing wet areas as an alternative to drained areas requires consideration of the complex characteristics of mires and careful decision-making involving all stakeholders. But they are not THE solution.

In this sense, this book provides knowledge of the mires of the region for these decision-making processes. In addition to the regional references, this book offers newly formed syntheses and information on:
- the diversity of natural peatlands in unprecedented detail, including for example, wetland species of mosses, fungi, birds, mammals, dragonflies, and beetles.
- experiences from mire projects in the region summarising practical tips and hints.
- a range of ecosystem services of wetlands in both the natural and used state as a basis for recommendations for actions.
- the position of mires in a changing climate
- description of numerous new instruments for planning and implementing a forward-thinking mire management.

Many mires have been cited and photographed as an example and inspiration for your own exploration.

- The new mire map based on the current terrain mapping blended with information from older data
- Information and listings, which were so far not available in this form, such as lists to moor and wetland species with threat and protection status, lists of protected areas with bogs, research publications on various topics, and facsimiles of older, very information-rich publications, that are normally difficult to access.

Moore sind faszinierend, vielfältig, kompliziert zu nutzen und reagieren sensibel auf Veränderungen. Sie prägen große Landschaften in Brandenburg und Berlin, sind seit Jahrhunderten durch den Menschen genutzt und nur auf ca. zwei Prozent der einstigen Fläche noch naturnah.

Die Nutzungsanforderungen an die entwässerten Moorflächen konkurrieren zunehmend. Moorlandschaften stehen - wie kein anderer Landschaftstyp in Mitteleuropa - symbolhaft für das Nebeneinander von Vor- und Nachteilen unterschiedlicher Managementformen, für die Notwendigkeit von Abwägungen der Ökosystemleistungen und die Lösung von Nutzungskonflikten.

Eine nachhaltigere Nutzung, die Unterschutzstellung oder eine nasse Bewirtschaftung als Alternative für entwässerte Flächen erfordern die Berücksichtigung der komplexen Eigenschaften der Moore und eine sorgfältige Entscheidungsfindung unter Einbeziehung aller Akteure. Es gibt nicht DIE Lösung.

In diesem Sinne bietet das vorliegende Buch Wissen zu den Mooren der Region für diese Entscheidungsprozesse. Neben dem regionalen Bezug bietet das Buch neu zusammengestellte Synthesen und Informationen zur:
