This book is the result of ten years of research conducted by volunteers into the dragonfly fauna of the Dutch province of Drenthe. The result is this richly illustrated book containing a large amount of data on the province of Drenthe. The book is not only intended as a resource for local councils and managers, but also as a source of information for dragonfly aficionados.

The introductory chapters deal with dragonfly ecology and research in Drenthe. The next, in-depth chapter discusses the different biotopes and landscapes found here, and the typical dragonfly species occurring here. Specific attention is paid to the likelihoods of finding dragonflies in natural reserves and agricultural areas.

The largest part of the book is dedicated to the species chapter, describing the 54 species found in Drenthe. For each species habitat, lifestyle, current distribution and expectations for the future are given. The authors per species also discuss potential threats, and any measures that could be taken to protect species and their habitats. Distribution maps are included, with nature reserves overlaid on the maps, and a table with the status of each species in both the Netherlands as a whole and Drenthe in particular, the rarity, population trend and Red List status is given. Graphics show the flight times and dates of earliest and latest observation dates. For each species, multiple colour photos have been included, often showing dragonflies in flight, as well as showing their habitat.

The 2016 reprint contains an extra eight pages, contains new distribution maps including data up to 2016, new photos, and revised texts.

Dit boek is het resultaat van tien jaar onderzoek door vrijwilligers naar de libellenfauna in de provincie Drenthe. De uitkomst hiervan is een rijk geïllustreerd boek met veel gegevens van de provincie Drenthe. Dit boek is niet alleen bedoeld als kennisbron voor lokale overheden en beheerders, maar richt zich ook op liefhebbers als bron van informatie over libellen.

De inleidende hoofdstukken gaan over de ecologie van libellen en over het libellenonderzoek in Drenthe. In een volgend uitgebreid hoofdstuk worden de verschillende biotopen en landschappen in de provincie beschreven en de kenmerkende libellensoorten die daarin voorkomen. Specifieke aandacht wordt hierbij besteed aan de verschillende kansen die natuurgebieden en agrarische gebieden bieden voor de aanwezigheid van libellen.

Het grootste deel van het boek wordt ingenomen door het hoofdstuk over de 54 soorten die in Drenthe voorkomen. Per soort wordt ingegaan op biotoop, leefwijze, huidige verspreiding en toekomstverwachting. Tevens bespreken de auteurs mogelijke bedreigingen per soort en maatregelen die kunnen worden genomen om de soort en haar leefgebied te beschermen. Ook wordt per soort een verspreidingskaart getoond, met op de achtergrond de diverse natuurgebieden, aangevuld met een tabel van de status in Nederland en in Drenthe, de zeldzaamheidscategorie, de trend van de soort en de Rode Lijststatus in Nederland. Verder wordt de vliegtijd grafisch weergegeven, met vermelding van de vroegste en de laatste waarneming. Elke soort wordt geïllustreerd met verschillende foto’s, vaak met haarscherpe vluchtfoto’s en een foto van de habitat.

De herziene druk van 2016 is acht pagina's dikker, bevat nieuwe verspreidingskaarten met gegevens tot 2016, nieuwe foto's, en geactualiseerde teksten.
