The product of over 35 years of studies and research conducted by the National Forest Service on its Bellunesi nature reserves, this volume of more than 900 pages and more than a thousand photos for the first time documents the extraordinary beetle richness that the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Nearly sixteen hundred species are treated, 6 new species are reported for the first time in Italy, 8 species are identified for the first time in the northeast of the country and 49 new presences are established in the region.

This is not a matter of secondary importance, given that a quarter of the planet's animal beings belongs to the order of the beetles. Therefore, the book documents the state of the most important terrestrial ecosystem, representative of 12.5% of the Italian beetle fauna. The authors Enzo Gatti, Marialuisa Dal Cortivo and Monica Sommacal focused their investigation on three areas in particular: The Nature Reserve Vincheto di Celarda, the Nature Reserve Orientata Val Tovanella and the Botanical Gardens in the Eastern Alps of Monte Faverghera. But they also report data on distribution in 778 other locations in Belluno.

For each of the 1596 species covered, the authors present a scientific description with ecological and biological notes, geographical range, distribution, bibliographical information as well as photographic reproductions of the beetles and their habitats.

Frutto di oltre 35 anni di studi e ricerche condotte dal Corpo Forestale dello Stato sulle proprie riserve naturali bellunesi, questo volume di oltre 900 pagine e più di mille immagini fotografa per la prima volta la straordinaria ricchezza che caratterizza la nostra provincia anche nel campo della coleotterofauna. Quasi milleseicento specie trattate, 6 nuove specie segnalate per la prima volta in Italia, 8 specie per la prima volta individuate nel nord est del nostro Paese e 49 nuove presenze in Regione.

Non è un dato di secondaria importanza, se si considera che un quarto degli esseri animali del pianeta appartiene all’ordine dei coleotteri e che dunque il libro documenta una realtà in assoluto tra le più significative dell’ecosistema terrestre e rappresentativa del 12,5% della coleotterofauna italiana. Gli autori Enzo Gatti, Marialuisa Dal Cortivo e Monica Sommacal hanno concentrato la loro indagine su tre zone in particolare: la Riserva Naturale Vincheto di Celarda, la Riserva Naturale Orientata Val Tovanella e il Giardino Botanico delle Alpi Orientali di Monte Faverghera, ma riportano anche dati di distribuzione per 778 altre località bellunesi.

Per ognuna delle 1596 specie trattate Gatti, Dal Cortivo e Sommacal presentano descrizione scientifica con note ecologiche e biologiche, geonemia, diffusione, segnalazioni bibliografiche oltre a riproduzioni fotografiche dei coleotteri e dei loro habitat.
