In 1992 one of the most ambitious projects in botany in recent times was started: the Atlas Flora Danica. Members of the Dansk Botanisk Forening, the Danish Botanical Society, divided the country into 1,300 squares, each measuring 5 × 5 km, spread across the country, and began to study the flora.

Square for square, from year to year and region to region, professional and amateur botanists, organized by the Dansk Botanisk Forening, have registered habitats for wild plants in all regions of the country. Almost 1 million data points spread over approximately 3,000 plant species were collected. They form the basis for the 2125 distribution maps presented in the book, which – 23 years after the start of this project – is now finally finished.

For all species and subspecies found the book outlines when and how they arrived in the country, which habitats they prefer, and where in the country they are found. The data also gives an idea of whether they have become rarer or more common. The many informative background chapters provide an understanding of why plants grow where they do. This ensures will get the most out of studying the distribution maps and ensure finding, observing and exploring these plants in the wild will be a great pleasure.
