About this book

Language: English

Common Reef Fishes of North Sulawesi, Indonesia is a cooperative achivement by the Third Institute of Oceanography, State Ocean Administration and the Indonesia Ocean Research Center. This program investigated 325 species of reef fish, of which 176 species belonging to 39 families and 9 orders have been selected to be included in this book. Their ecological pictures and distributions, taxonomy, Chinese and Indonesian names, living environment, length, morphology and colour, etc. are provided here.

Nine sites in Lembeh Strait and eleven sites in Likupang and Bunaken were investigated using an underwater visual census, but coverage was limited to shallow reef fishes that are wholly or mainly confined to coral reefs of less than about 30 m depth. In total, 325 reef-associated fish species were recorded from North Sulawesi, of which 176 were photographed. Most of the fishes (146 species) belong to the Perciformes. The Pomacentridae dominate (38 species), followed by the Labridae (25 species), the Chaetodontidae (18 species), the Apogonidae and Serranidae (7 species), and the Pomacanthidae and Acanthuridae (6 species).
