Nansha Islands, China's only sea region close to the equator, is abundant in Indo-Malay tropical fauna with high biodiversity. Fishes living in the vast sea regions of Nansha Islands northward to Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, Dongsha Islands, the waters off Hainan Island, Beibu Gulf and South China coastal waters, are complex in species biodiversity and vary greatly in ecological characteristics, i.e., there are pelagic species, species of coastal zones on the continental shelf, species of coral reef and species from deep sea basin several thousand meters in depth. Today, how to utilize the fishery resourceses of the South China Sea more efficiently and continually has become an important study subject, considering both sustainable development while strengthening protection of these resources. This collection of fishes in Nansha Islands and South China coastal waters is compiled and edited by scientific personnel who carried out the in-situ investigations and classifications in recent years. The book describes 564 species, 301 genera, and 139 families, and will be of reference value to people who engage in fishery production and management in Nansha Islands and other waters of the South China Sea.
