About this book

Language: Spanish

Undoubtedly, one of the main global challenges facing humanity today is the conservation of biological diversity. Without it, the human species will not survive on this planet. For this reason, in the current context of increasing degradation of ecosystems and massive loss of species, urgent action is needed to help stem the erosion of biodiversity. But to really be effective, such measures must be based on accurate knowledge of reality: what species we have, how abundant they are, where the most important communities are, what problems threaten them, and with what priority these must be resolved. However, in the case of mammal communities that still exist in Spain, this basic and fundamental information has been, so far, largely non-existent.

In this work the 170 important areas for mammals that exist in Spain identified and described in detail for the first time, considering all species of land mammals in systematic fashion. These areas were objectively evaluated by more than one hundred experts applying a set of technical criteria. They must be protected and properly managed to ensure long-term survival of species and mammal communities that remain in Spain. To that end, an overall diagnosis of the conservation issues facing communities of mammals is included, also pointing to each particular area and the current threats which compromise their integrity and future viability.

In short, this catalog of important areas is an indispensable tool for monitoring, management and conservation of mammal species in Spain.
