This effort is a general introductory review of the Indian Forestry Sector, its potential and challenges. It is aimed at informing the average literate citizen of India as well as the student generations who will be members of the Indian society of tomorrow. Such a review is relevant due to the prevailing absence of an easily accessible, understandable and reliable single source of basic background information, relating to Indian Forests, Forestry and Foresters. in its absence, considerable misinformation and misunderstanding exists in Indian society on this subject.
The material presented here is not a research document. It is a collation of information gleaned from a variety of sources over the years, blended with the author's personal views on representative forest and environment related issues. The information has been drawn over many years from a variety of books, magazines and newspaper articles, many of which are not usually within easy reach of the average Indian citizen.
