This work is a study of the community of saproxylic Coleoptera in Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park, a natural area of ​​forest in La Rioja, Spain, marked by three prevailing forest types: pine, beech and oak wood. In any forest, wood is the largest amount of plant biomass that exists. When wood dies and decomposes, nutrients contained within are gradually returned to the soil, restoring its fertility. The decomposition of wood is carried out mainly by the activity of fungi and other microorganisms, but is mediated by saproxylic invertebrates.

Saproxylic organisms are those species of invertebrates that depend for at least part of their life cycle on dead or decrepit wood from old, dying or dead trees; or fungi that grow on wood; or the presence of other saproxylic organisms. Insects are the most abundant and diverse group of saproxylic organisms, especially beetles. Many species of saproxylic beetles are considered rare or threatened and are included in the lists of protected species in different European countries. Moreover, they are bio-indicators of the quality of forests, so knowledge of them is a useful tool to identify those natural areas that must be protected.

Studies carried out in the Iberian Peninsula on saproxylic beetles are very scarce, this book being the most complete of those made so far. In total 421 species have been cataloged, spread over 49 families of Coleoptera, Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park being one of the natural areas with the greatest diversity of species of saproxylic beetles of those studied so far in Europe. The greatest diversity was found in hardwood forests (oak and beech), where 340 species were caught, while in coniferous forests (pine) 150 species were captured. Approximately 50 species listed are considered to be some significant indicator of well-preserved forests with high ecological value in European countries.

Esta obra constituye un estudio de la comunidad de coleópteros saproxílicos del Parque Natural Sierra de Cebollera, espacio natural riojano de marcado carácter forestal en el que predominan tres tipos de bosque: el pinar, el hayedo y el robledal. En cualquier bosque, la madera supone la mayor cantidad de biomasa vegetal que existe. Cuando la madera muere, a medida que se descompone, los nutrientes que contiene vuelven gradualmente al suelo, restaurando su fertilidad. La descomposición de la madera es llevada a cabo, fundamentalmente, por la actividad de hongos y otros microorganismos, pero es mediada por los invertebrados conocidos como saproxílicos

Los organismos saproxílicos son aquellas especies de invertebrados que dependen, durante al menos una parte de su ciclo biológico, de la madera muerta o decrépita procedente de árboles añosos, moribundos o muertos; o de los hongos que se desarrollan en la madera; o de la presencia de otros organismos saproxílicos. Los insectos constituyen el grupo más abundante y diverso de organismos saproxílicos, y en especial los coleópteros. Muchas especies de coleópteros saproxílicos son consideradas raras o amenazadas y están incluidas en las listas de especies protegidas de diversos países europeos. Además, son bioindicadores de la calidad de los bosques, por lo que su conocimiento constituye una útil herramienta para identificar aquellos espacios naturales que deben ser protegidos.

Los estudios llevados a cabo en la Península Ibérica sobre coleópteros saproxílicos son muy escasos, siendo el presente libro el más completo de los realizados hasta ahora. En total se han catalogado 421 especies, repartidas en 49 familias de coleópteros, siendo el Parque de Cebollera uno de los espacios naturales con mayor diversidad de especies de coleópteros saproxílicos de los estudiados hasta ahora en Europa. La mayor diversidad se ha encontrado en bosques de frondosas (roble y hayedo), donde se capturaron 340 especies, mientras que en bosques de coníferas (pino) se han capturado 150 especies. Aproximadamente 50 de las especies catalogadas son consideradas, en algunos países europeos, significativamente indicadoras de bosques bien conservados y con alto valor ecológico.
