About this book

Language: Portuguese

This book includes the study of 90 native species of Minas Gerais and Goiás, Brazil, used for various purposes and mentioned in the works of eight British and French naturalists who visited the country during the nineteenth century. Although most species have medical utility, others were also included, such as wood producing plants, edible fruits, or plants used as ornaments or in dyeing. The presentation of the species is done in alphabetical order, and mentions the popular name of the plant. The scientific name, the family to which it belongs and other popular names, when they occur, are also highlighted. Excerpts of texts drawn from cited works enrich the work, as well as photographs of the species in the field, in herbaria or printed in old illustrations. Another unprecedented and very productive detail are the comments, taken, for example, from naturalist's field books that analyzed the species, and the technical and scientific data, especially related to recent work in the areas of phytochemistry and pharmacology.
