Volume 12 is the final volume in the series. The introduction present the internal characteristic and the hinge detail of some species of the Order Veneroida with the Family: Veneridae with Chamelea gallina, Gouldia minima, Dosinia exoleta and Callistotapes vetula; Trapeziidae with Coralliophaga lithophagella; Cardidae with Acanthocardia spinosa, Plagicardium irsutum and Laevicardium crassum; Chamidae with Chama placentina and Chama gryphina; Nuculanoida with the family: Nuculanidae with Nuculana pella, Jupiteria concava and Saccella commutata; Tindariidae with Yoldia nitida; Nuculoida with the family Nuculidae with Nucula nitidosa. The book describes 59 fossil species of shells included in the Subclassis Heteroconchia. The species included in the Family are: Veneridae (26 species), Trapeziidae (1 species), Cardiidae (18 species), Chamidae (3 species), Nuculanidae (5 species), Yoldiidae (1 species), Nuculidae (5 species). The chronostratigraphical distributions of the following species: Venus nux, Acanthocardia echinata, Chama gryphoides and Nucula nucleus, are illustrated by one European map.

Every species is accompanied by the original name and the book’s title where the author described it. This is followed by a large bibliography, the distinguishing characteristics, and, where possible, the original diagnosis. Also included is a list of the fossil beds and their temporal and spatial distribution. Finally. observations on similar species and comments on nomenclature and ecological spaces are given. There are alphabetic indices by species name and generic and subgeneric name. The bibliography lists 392 titles.
