About this book

Language: English

The Plant Genetic Resource Division of Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), in Kerala, India, undertook the work of the project "Establishment of a Model Medicinal Plant Garden at TBGRI" during the period 2005 - 2009. The Bee's herbal garden was developed in one of the semi-evergreen forest patches located within the 121 ha garden site of JNTBGRI. In the Bee's herbal garden, the visitors can feel the ambience of wilderness and experience the dynamism of an ecosystem. This herbal garden is intended to instil in the visitors the need for conservation of herbals as well as ecosystems. Many exhibits, garden features and educational labels have been installed in the garden. A medicinal plant trail of 682 m length was also laid out, which starts from the Itty Achuthan Vaidyan's herbal garden, passes through the Bee's herbal garden and ends near the guest house of JNTBGRI. While walking along the trail, the visitors can familiarize with herbals, other species of the flora and fauna and features of the garden.

In this handbook, key information pertaining to selected species and features of Bee's herbal garden are given one after another, along with photographic illustrations. The details provided in the book include, habit, habitat, distribution, propagation and medicinal / other uses of the species, emphasizing their unique traits. In order to make the readers familiarize easily with the species and certain other aspects mentioned in the book, Malayalam language is used employing Malayalam scripts as well as their English transliteration which is underlined.
