About this book

Language: French

L'Insecte Médicinal is an unusual and unique book that for the first time discusses this global topic from an entomological point of view. It is accessible to non-specialists curious about the medicinal use of insects, but the most recent scientific data are also described.

It synthesizes knowledge about human medicinal use of over 300 terrestrial arthropod species (belonging to 85 families) in every continent in the world. Chapters deal with the biology, history, chemistry and pharmacology, and are devoted to Spanish fly, the cordyceps, the silkworm, apitherapy, or maggot healing for example. A table summarizes at the end of the book known indications for each species. Links between molecules and remedies are identified, in light of the convergence of information between continents. Indications that have been experimentally confirmed are described, as is the latest research on groups of medicinal insects. One hundred chemical molecules are presented, amongst them several new and novel molecules.

This book confirms that insects are the true reservoir of chemical diversity on earth, and therefore the biggest reservoir of future drug molecules.
