In 30 chapters, all aspects of the crane are discussed in this book, beginning with the European Middle Ages, construction and function of the body, voice, behaviour, reproductive biology, flight and migration, rest and overwintering, and the influence of climate, agriculture and technical environment as well as the protection requirements. The focus is on the distribution in Europe and Germany. The situation of the crane with regards to breeding, migration and overwintering is also described for the Asian countries. All 15 species of cranes are described in words and pictures. An English summary of the main contents is included. The book is also devoted to the changes within this century, related to climate change, the relationship to agriculture and the influence of human society. The causes of populatio fluctuations are dealt with, considering which the current growth of the population is particularly impressive in the countries of the European Union. This shows that this large and shy bird can find the necessary habitat under high-tech conditions with optimal protection standards.

In 30 Kapiteln werden in diesem Buch werden alle Aspekte des Kranichs abgehandelt, beginnend mit dem europäischen Mittelalter, dem Bau und der Funktion des Körpers, der Stimme, dem Verhalten, der Fortpflanzungsbiologie, dem Flug und Zug, der Rast und Überwinterung bis hin zu dem Einfluß des Klimas, der Landwirtschaft und technischen Umwelt sowie der Schutzerfordernisse. Im Vordergrund steht die Verbreitung in Europa und Deutschland. Die Situation des Kranichs mit Brut, Zug und Überwinterung ist für die asiatischen Staaten ebenfalls beschrieben. Es werden alle 15 Kranicharten in Wort und Bild dargestellt. Ergänzend folgt eine englische Zusammenfassung der wesentlichen Inhalte. Das Buch widmet sich auch den Veränderungen innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts, bezogen auf den Klimawandel, die Beziehung zur Landwirtschaft und die Einflussnahme der menschlichen Gesellschaft. Abgehandelt sind die Ursachen von Bestandsschwankungen, unter denen das aktuelle Wachstum der Population besonders in den Ländern der Europäischen Union beeindruckt. Hiermit kann aufgezeigt werden, dass dieser große und scheue Vogel unter hochtechnisierten Bedingungen bei optimalen Schutzstandards den erforderlichen Lebensraum findet.
