This book integrates microbiology and chemistry and looks at the effects of metals on microorganisms and, in turn, the effects of microorganisms on metals and their compounds. The accelerating impact of molecular biology will be felt, particularly in the elucidation of the structure of proteins that bind, transport or have their function modulated by metals. The book begins with coverage of those aspects of coordination chemistry central to an understanding of biological function and discuss the difficulties of analyzing metals in biological systems. An account of the nutritional requirements of microorganisms for growth also highlights experimental difficulties, in this case the provision of adequately chelated metals and speciation and metal limitation. There follows detailed accounts of these essentail elements taken up by cells and the functions of metals, main group and transition, in a wide range of cellular activities.
This well-presented book describes metal-microbe interactions from a chemical and microbiological perspective... The authors are to be commended for tackling this huge field...this book is essential for specialists and should also be read by a wider audience as an education on metal involvement in all aspects of microbial growth and metalbolism. Society for General Microbiology Quarterly; This well-presented book is about the effects of metals on micro-organisms on metals. The authors are to be congratulated for successfully mastering this huge subject area and producing a thoroughly readable book that is amply illustrated with excellent diagrams, tables and formulae. The style is clear and understandable for the specialist and non-specialist alike. Times Higher Education Supplement; The book is a must for the biological chemist of whatever persuasion as well as the biotechnologist and those interested in the industrial importance of biological methods in the isolation of valuable metals from low grade sources..One author is a chemist, the other a microbiologist and the result of their collaboration is an interesting, timely and stimulating. Chemistry and Industry; ...the first interdisciplinary, integrated coverage of this increasingly important area..This ..integrated coverage of metals and micro-organisms will serve as a valuable source of reference for researchers in many areas..This book is recommended as rewarding reading to anyone working with micro-organisms. The European Journal of Protistology; This book fills the gap in the literature that has existed for many years...the chapters contain a very up-to-date bibliography...The authors are not only researchers and scholars of the first rank but teachers of excellence..I recommend this book to students of microbiology of all ages and to all those concerned with metals in the environment. TIBTECH; ...This book is stylishly written and edited, systematically ordered and comprehensively indexed. It will undoubtedly be of value both to microbiologists and inorganic chemists attemting to create and expand the cross-discipline of inorganic microbiology... Chemistry in Britain; ...The authors are to be commended on their efforts in assembling all of this material, and on the meticulousness with which they have extracted a somewhat sensible picture from a rather chaotic literature.
