This symposium volume brings together leading specialists in a wide range of disciplines, and includes work on forest hydrology, and a whole set of investigations into aspects of traditional farming systems in rain forest climates which have involved soil agronomists, anthropologists, geographers, ecologists and soil scientists. In doing so it points the way towards a better understanding of the tropical ecosystem and will provide a basis for further discussion of sustainable development of endangered ecosystems.
