About this book

Language: German

Since ancient times, the capercaillie has received special attention from people due to its size and suitability as game. Today it has become a bird species in trouble as far as nature and species protection are concerned: in much of Europe, populations are in decline, threatened with extinction, or already gone. In some places it has taken great costs in terms of human and material resources to reintroduce the birds again. In this situation, an overview of our knowledge on the biology of the species is urgently needed. The authors, which have published a monograph on the hazel grouse in the same series, strengthened by additional staff to make an international team, have made it their task to create an overview of the most important results from the older and newer, especially the Scandinavian and Soviet, literature, together with their own experiences and partly unpublished data. The focus is on ecology, behavior, population biology and protection. However, morphological and physiological aspects of biology, daily and annual cycles, and breeding and captivity are also treated. Open problems are pointed out. This volume will equally serve those interested in ornithology and biology, as well as hunters, and will serve as a reference work and startinging point for discussion.
