About this book

The first chapter covers selected papers presenting the results derived from satellite studies of the ocean and highlights the new data from the ERS-1 satellite. Chapter 2 covers a variety of hydrology related areas - evapotranspiration, soil moisture, measurement of precipitation, snow cover, hydrologic modelling, monitoring of inland waters quality together with the type of sensors required to provide remote sensing data to the hydrologic community. Finally, the third chapter entitled Space Data Applications to Agricultural Meteorology features the concept of Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) in which the intensity of drought is assessed by the relative graphical location of a particular season Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) temporal profile, within the best and worst years.

Part 1 Satellite observations of the ocean and air/sea interaction with emphasis on new results from ERS-1: preface; ERS-1 one year after!; status and perspectives of the ERS programme, G. Duchossois and M. Fea; ice studies on the Barents Sea by ERS-1 SAR during SIZEX 92, S. Sandven and O.M. Johannessen; study of sediment dynamics using satellite remote sensing, B. Manikiam et al; satellite observations of continental shelf front in Northern China Sea, R. Huang et al. Part 2 Progress in scientific hydrology and water resources management using remote sensing: preface; understanding land surface evapotranspiration with satellite multispectral measurements, M. Menenti; microwave soil moisture estimation in humid and semiarid watersheds, P.E. O'Neill et al; rain-rate classification of INSAT/VHRR images through statistical methods, R. Parvathi et al; intercomparisons between passive and active microwave remote sensing and hydrological modelling for soil moisture, E.F. Wood et al; evolution in the use of satellite data for the location and development of groundwater, Ph. Dutartre et al. Part 3 Space data applications to agricultural meteorology: satellite thermal infrared data applications in agricultural meteorology, B.
