South Africa is suftering from decades of environmental mismanagement, aggravated and often institutionalised by apartheid, which forced people to live in rural and urban areas unable to sustain them. As South Africans begin to create a new society, they see the restoration of the environment as a priority. People must regain control over their lives and over resources.
This book brings together South Africans of all races, from environmental pressure groups, universitles, the media. law firms and unions as well as those directly affected by damaging industrial, agricultural and conservation policies. They examine key environmental issues across the region, from poor farming practices to energy policies, from the legacy of asbestos dumps to laws about conservation, outlining both the extent of the crisis and the actions which must be taken if the environment is to be healed.
