This monumental two-volume work is a landmark in European taxonomy. It has been devised and compiled to allow the user to locate, quickly and efficiently, taxonomic and common name data on any animal species occurring in Europe. Over 150,000 animal species names are listed in 12,000 entries, with headwords given in Latin, followed by their equivalent in German, English, French, Hungarian, Spanish and Russian. For each language, the standard name and applied zoological, preferred names and synonyms, dialectal, obsolete, misapplied and misleading names are given. The organisation of the thesaurus allows cross-referencing in any of the languages used. Volume I lists entries in systematic order, whilst Volume II contains the indexes of languages. An invaluable tool for zoologists, applied biologists, taxonomists and scientific translators.
