About this book

A New Herball, originally published in three parts during the second half of the sixteenth century, was the first English herbal with any pretensions to scientific status. As such, it provided a landmark in the history of botany and herbalism, breaking new ground in its accuracy of observation and its scientific thoroughness. For the first time since its original publication, the entire Herball is now available in a facsimile edition which faithfully reproduces the beautiful sixteenth-century black-letter text and woodcut illustrations. To aid the twentieth-century reader, a modernised transcript, together with keyed-in notes, a glossary of unfamiliar terms and comprehensive indexes have been provided. Biographical information on this influential physician, naturalist and cleric is also included to give an indication of his contribution to sixteenth-century English history.

'This is a well-timed new edition of this book, coinciding as it does with both an increased interest in herbal medicine, and people in Britain today taking more notice of their plant heritage ! I am sure it will be a valuable reference for people working in British ethnobotany and I commend the editors for making such an important herbal widely available.' Laura Hastings, Curtis' Botanical Magazine 'This facsimile of a 1551 illustrated herbal, together with a transcription of the black-letter text, introductory material, indexes and notes, adds up to a heavy tome ! but I soon became aware of breathing an uncommonly fresh intellectual air ! the temptation to patronise the book with easy hindsight and plunder it for quaint examples quickly evaporated.' Kim Taplin, Countryman's Bookcase '! much quoted but rarely seen, until the Cambridge University Press produced this magisterial edition. Now those working in historic gardens have an essential tool they have hitherto been denied.' Anthony Lyman-Dixon, European Gardens '! a work of art in itself, superbly presented, well-bound, clearly printed and on decent paper ! this is one of those books that once seen is coveted for one's own collection.' Anthony Lyman-Dixon, Herbs
