This circular grew from an Element Stewardship Abstract (ESA) the author was asked to prepare for the Eastern Regional Office of The Nature Conservancy. The Nature Conservancy is an international ecological land conservation organization and is involved in conserving the Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) by protecting lands where it occurs, The Conservancy began an ESA database to provide to state offices, Natural Heritage Programs, and private and public resource managers current management-related information in standard format and through a national computer system. As the author got involved in the project on Crotalus horridus, he felt that there might be a broader need among conservation biologists, wildlife ecologists, and herpetologists for this information beyond the network of general availability of the ESAs. This publication is a result of that effort.

An ESA is designed purposely to be provisional and to provide for the continuous updating of information by conversant workers. This paper is. similarly, not a final statement of conservation needs of the Timber Rattlesnake. It is, rather, an attempt to summarize current knowledge (most of the published older and current literature on the Timber Rattlesnake is also summarized and cited) and to point out areas where more research is needed.
