About this book

A completely rewritten and enlarged edition of Haverschmidt's earlier work, Birds of Surinam (Oliver & Boyd, 1968). This major reference work describes 668 species, the entire Surinam avifauna, and will also be invaluable for all of the Guianas. Text covers identification, habitat, nesting and ranges, as well as family descriptions, breeding data and references. Introductory chapters cover climate, topography, a review of the avifauna, migration, nomenclature, and conservation in Suriname. There are four indexes: English, scientific, local and French bird names, plus an extensive bibliography. There are 6 new plates by Inge van Noortwijk, in addition to the 40 original plates by Paul Barruel (some of which have been corrected by van Noortwijk), depicting 443 species, and with reference information on the facing page.
