About this book

Language: German with English contributions

Wilhelm Carl Hartwig Peters was one of the most productive herpetologists of his era, and arguably the greatest German herpetologist of the 19th century. For more than 25 years he served as director of the Zoologisches Museum, the largest of several natural history museums of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin (now part of the Museum für Naturkunde of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin). His contributions included detailed studies of development and considerations of homologies, as well as hundreds of systematic accounts containing descriptions of new taxa.

In this volume facsimile reprints of all of Peters' original herpetological books and papers are provided. Only announcements, abstracts, or translations without any additional material are excluded. Also provided are an annotated bibliography to Peters' 202 herpetological al publications and a synopsis of the taxa he described, along with citation information, status of types, type localities, and current names. It is the contributors' hope that the availability of Peters' contributions in this form will stem the tide of incorrect citations and missatements of type and locality data and that this book will highlight the truly monumental legacy that Peters left for systematic herpetology.
