About this book

Language: German

Common moorhen are water-loving birds that behave quite secretively in a natural environment, mainly during the breeding season. As wild inhabitants of park waters, they have adapted amazingly, so that one can observe their interesting behaviour there well. Taking into account the very extensive literature and simultaneous use of own observations and findings from four decades, the author has created a comprehensive monograph on the common moorhen. The focus of this work is the reproductive biology of free-living moorhen. Their behaviour before and during courtship, brood care, personal grooming and food intake are described in detail. Population trends in Europe are also dealt with in detail. Because of its decrease in large parts of Germany the common moorhen is now red listed; the author comments on and discusses proposals for protection. Uncertainties or knowledge gaps about this bird are mentioned. Consequently, this monograph gives a good overview of the current state of knowledge about Gallinula chloropus.
