About this book

Language: German

The warblers, which are amongst the last migratory birds to return from Africa in late April / early May, are among the most famous native songbirds. Treated here are the Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis) and Lesser Whitethroad (Sylvia curruca), which are birds of open land, unlike the forest-dwelling Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin) and Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), which move like typical bush birds with quick movements and are skilful climbers in thick undergrowth. In their habit and their way of life, the two are essentially similar, but in their singing and their choice of nest site they behave differently. The Lesse Whitethroat lives near human settlements, while the Common Whitethroat has a preference for thickets in the broadest sense. In this book the reader will learn the whole life of the two species in their breeding area, from the territory establishment, the courtship behavior and various phases of nest-building, the scrupulous care of the brood by adult birds, to the behavior of the young birds from the first day until fledging and their journey to their winter quarters. Warbler populations are threatened by various hazards. As natural enemies of many insects they should be protected, and this especially applies to their nesting areas in hedges and shrubs.
