About this book

Language: German

The colorful Bluethroat, which belongs to the genus of the nightingale bird, is spread in much of Europe and Asia in the form of various subspecies. Only a few people have been able to watch it, as it occurs only sporadically and has a rather hidden, earthbound life style. This talented singer, who can mimic many other voices, is found in moist alluvial forests along rivers, or in young treestands with man-high grass, where it seeks its food, consisting mainly of insects and their larvae, solely on the ground. The proximity of the water is a requirement, and so the Bluethroat is particularly prevalent in Hungary where the growing of fish in fish farms and the associated reed strips and protective embankments offers many nesting opportunities to the Bluethroat. Even in Scandinavia and Finland populations are numerous. The nest is built in a depression on ground level, sometimes in caves, hidden in the vegetation, so that eggs and young are very well protected against birds of prey, but often fall prey to ground predators such as weasels and foxes. The author, who was doing his observations mainly in Hungary at Lake Velence and its fishponds, also reports the appearance of this species in Europe and Asia and shines a light on its convergent or divergent ways of life in the various biotopes.
