From the introduction:
"The present catalog lists the 1078 mammal type specimens (1062 holotypes, 2 syntypes, 11 lectotypes, 2 neotypes, and 1 paratype) now held by the American Museum of Natural History in the Department of Mammalogy as of 1993. The new information reflects not only the results of the taxonomic revisions during the last 40 years but also includes annotations about type specimens that have been identified as composites, and corrects errors that appeared in original publications. The new catalog also omits irrelevant information and amends mistakes and omissions that were published in the 1953 catalog"
