On the doorstep of the 3 million populace of Melbourne, Port Philip Bay, which receives the stormwater runoff of the city and half of its sewage, should be a toxic dump. Instead it has clear water, a diverse community of living creatures, and neglible pollution problems. Why? This report explains the key processes which control the water quality of the bay, and provides a model for all estuarine management strategies.
