International trade in aquatic animal species (fish, molluscs and crustaceans) has increased substantially in recent years, and unless adequate safeguards are imposed, carries a genuine risk of spreading diseases from one country to another. Based on an OIE conference held in Paris in 1995, this series of papers documents historical examples, characteristics of current trade, disease problems, and national and international legislation.
