Wetlands play a very important role in maintaining biodiversity and bioproductivity in Nepal, and play a strategic function in the terai region. Despite their importance, however, they are progressively converted into agricultural fields for other purposes without consideration of the long-term adverse consequences to the total ecosystem. The management of wetlands as a biodiversity component has been broadly discussed in the National Conservation Strategy of Nepal. Accordingly, the Heritage and Biodiversity Conservation Programme of the National Conservation Strategy Implementation Project has formed a consultative group from HMG line agencies, local NGOs and the academic community in Nepal.
