About this book

Language: English with multilingual species diagnoses

This catalogue includes all scientific names published in the green alga genus Scenedesmus, and in several other genera that are implicated in Scenedesmus taxonomy, whether valid or invalid. The primary source has been the Index Nominum Algarum, a card file compiled and maintained in the Herbarium of the University of California at Berkeley by P.C. Silva. For each entry of a new taxon is given the author, the place of original publication, a transcription of the original description or diagnosis, the type locality, the type, and a reproduction of the original illustrations (in part or in whole). If the protologue specifies the institution or private collection where the type has been deposited, this information is given in the catalogue. If a Latin description or diagnosis is provided in the protologue, it is transcribed in the catalogue. If a description or diagnosis in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish accompanies the Latin version in the protologue, it is also transcribed in the catalogue. In the absence of Latin, the description or diagnosis is either transcribed in the original language or translated into English. The boundary between the description or diagnosis in the protologue and the discussion is often indistinct, and the authors have arbitrarily decided what material to include in the catalogue. All taxonomic opinions are documented by a citation.
