Traditionally, eucalypts have been difficult to identify, but now with even a minimum amount of plant material and instructive illustrations, the task has been made much simpler. This first `edition' of EUCLID (EUCaLypt IDentification) treats the 325 species and subspecies of south-eastern Australia, i.e. New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Tasmania and south-eastern south Australia. Key features of these species (natural distribution, habit, bark, flower buds, fruits, seeds and juvenile leaves) are used to provide the characters, 115 in all, that may be chosen in any order by the user to allow identification.
