Provides an overview of the South African Fire-Atmosphere Research Initiative (SAFARI), an interdisciplinary project which involved more than a hundred and fifty scientists from fourteen countries. SAFARI investigated the relationship between fires and savanna ecology in southern Africa, determined the emissions from savanna fires in the region, and studied the transport of pyrogenic emissions across the sub-continent and adjacent oceanic areas.
