About this book

This publication contains 38 of 80 papers on the inner magnetosphere system that were presented at a two-day symposium on this subject at the 31st COSPAR Scientific Assembly held in Birmingham, England. It consists of observational and theoretical papers on the ring current, neutral atom imaging, transport of radiation-belt electrons and protons, plasmasphere, subauroral ionosphere, fields and particles in the inner magnetosphere, currents in the inner ionosphere/inner magnetosphere system, and waves. Included are invited papers on CRRES ring current observations, prediction of ring current strength, ENA imaging of magnetospheric ions from both high- and low-altitude spacecraft, dynamics of the outer plasmasphere, and the large-scale current system and ionosphere/magnetosphere coupling. Contributed papers add to the understanding of the complex inner magnetosphere system.

Contents

The Ring Current. Review of CRRES ring current observations (R.H.W. Friedel, A. Korth). A Monte Carlo model of the ring current decay (S. Noel, G.W. Prolss). Neutral Atom Imaging. Observations of energetic neutral atoms by the EPIC instrument-first result on the composition (A.T.Y. Liu et al. ). ENA emission from nearly-mirroring magnetosphere ions interacting with the exosphere (E.C. Roelof). Radiation Belts. Spatial distributions of the inner radiation belt electrons: a comparison between observations and radial diffusion theory predictions (D.M. Boscher et al. ). Physical modeling of radiation belt response to geomagnetic storm: 2. on a 10 hour-10 day time scale (S. Boudarie et al. ). The Plasmasphere. The Dynamic Plasmasphere (M.B. Moldwin et al. ). Plasmasphere electron temperature-observations and theory (T. Abe et al. ). The Subauroral Ionosphere. Dynamic changes in the outer ionosphere in the region of the ionospheric trough during an intense magnetic storm (H. Rothkaehl et al. ). High-latitude ionosphere structure in dayside sector on ground-based and satellite measurements (L.V. Shestakova et al. ). Fields and Particles in the Inner Magnetosphere. Towards inner magnetosphere particle and field models (H.E. Spence et al. ). The inner magnetosphere source of dawn-dusk electric field and magnetospheric dynamics (E.E. Antonova, N.Yu. Ganushkina). Currents in the Ionosphere/Inner Magnetosphere. The large-scale current system and the ionosphere/magnetosphere coupling (D. Fontaine, C. Peymirat). Modeling of field-aligned currents in the magnetosphere and ionosphere (E.E. Tsedilina et al. ). Waves. Phase-mixing poloidal Alfven wave polarisations (I.R. Mann et al. ).
