About this book

In 1988, The Danish Technical Research Council decided to support a four year research programme on sludge dewatering. The ambition was to establish a more scientific basis for improved sludge management; thereby supplementing an already existing and relatively advanced wastewater treatment knowledge and technology; and make it possible to optimize the entire wastewater treatment system, including both wastewater and sludge treatment. In order to place the programme in an international context, it was decided at the same time to organize an international conference in Denmark on the theme; "Wastewater Sludge Dewatering". These proceedings are the results of this conference, held in Rebild near Aalborg from June 29 to July 1, 1992.

Part 1 Keynote paper: unifying the theory of thickening, filtration, and centrifugation, F.M. Tiller and N.B. Hsyung. Part 2 Full-scale dewatering: predicting the dewatering performance of belt filter presses, J. Novak et al; a comparative study of full-scale sludge dewatering equipment, I. Andreasen and B. Nielsen. Part 3 Thickening: channelling in batch thickening, P.A. Vesilind and G.N. Jones; parameters influencing sludge thickening by dissolved air flotation, M. Sugahara and S. Oku. Part 4 Laboratory characterization: specific cake resistance - myth or reality?, I. Tosun et al; anaerobic storage of activated sludge - effects on conditioning and dewatering performance, J.H. Bruus et al; on the origin of specific resistance to filtration, M.L. Agerbaek and K. Keiding. Part 5 Conditioning: characterization and dewatering of activated sludge from the pulp and paper industry, J. Pere et al; rapid mixing in sludge conditioning with polymers, S.J. Langer and R. Klute. Part 6 Return flows: influence of enhanced biological phosphorus removal on sludge treatment, H.J. Popel and N. Jardin; elimination of nitrogen and phosphorus from sludge liquor, D. Wedi and E. Konig. Part 7 Overview: wastewater sludge research - overview and perspectives by the editors, K. Keiding et al; keyword index.
