About this book

Although the development and application of dissolved air flotation for water and wastewater treatment, principally in South Africa and Europe, has been well established for a few decades, its use in the USA and elsewhere is relatively recent. What has become clear, though, is that it is frequently the "best available technology", whether for industrial or municipal applications, for raw water clarification, sludge thickening or wastewater treatment. This is evidence from these proceedings which are an up-to-date overview of flotation technology worldwide. They include papers and posters selected from those presented at the very busy three day conference on Flotation Processes in Water and Sludge Treatment, in Orlando, Florida in April 1994, which was attended by about 180 delegates. The papers have been grouped, starting with fundamental concepts, moving through pretreatment and process selection, on to applications in wastewater and sludge and then industrial applications.

Modelling flotation and floc bubble interactions - behaviour of air injection nozzles in dizzolved air flotation, E.M. Rykaart and J. Haarhoff; pretreatment optimization - optimization of coagulation processes prior to DAF, R. Klute et al; process selection - pilot plant testing of dissolved air flotation for treating Boston's low-turbidity surface water supply, B.A. Johnson et al, DAF treatment of a reservoir water supply - comparison with in-line direct filtration and control of organic matter, P.D. Schmidt et al; engineering and design - design parameters for dissolved air flotation in South Africa, J. Haarhoff and L.R.J. van Vuuren, the first DAF water treatment plant in the United States, D. Nickols et al; municipal wastewater and sludge - primary-secondary flotation of three municipal wastewaters - pilot-scale study, M. Krofta et al; industrial wastewater - application of dissolved air flotation for treatment of wastewater from meat processing industry, J. Wasowski.
