Conventional waste management technologies as adopted in leading industrialized nations tend to be expensive to build and operate and also make exacting operation and maintenance demands. Such characteristics are questionable in that context - for developing countries they are surely inappropriate. The search for what is appropriate is a key role for water scientists and engineers. Research and development efforts have increasingly sought waste treatment technologies which are compatible with local environmental and economic conditions and appropriate for semi-urban settlements, isolated communities and a variety of industrial simulations. This volume concentrates on recent advances in physico-chemical and biological treatment systems including hazardous waste management and common effluent treatment facilities.
