About this book

This publication contains 41 of the 109 papers presented at the symposium "Coupling and Energetics in the Coupled Stratosphere-Mesosphere-Thermosphere-Ionosphere System" presented at the 31st COSPAR Scientific Assembly held in Birmingham, England, 1996. Areas covered include all aspects of the energy and momentum budget of the middle atmosphere, the lower thermosphere, and ionosphere. The basic structure of these regions of the atmosphere is examined, as are fluxes of dynamical, chemical and radiative energy and momentum at all spatial and temporal scales. The symposium and this publication provide an excellent platform from which future advances will be driven by improved data sets to be obtained from new investigations by means of rockets, satellites and new MST, coherent and incoherent scatter radars.

Contents

Electrodynamic coupling effects in the thermosphere/ionosphere system (A.D. Richmond, R.G. Roble). A new Fabry-Perot interferometer for atmospheric studies with the EISCAT incoherent radar (M.J. Kosch et al. ). Nighttime F2-layer peak height changes due to thermospheric winds (P.R. Fagundes et al. ). Experimental investigation of the coupling processes in the middle atmosphere/lower thermosphere/ionosphere system (B.A. De La Morena et al. ). Cosmic ray variation influence on the total radiation fluxes in the lower atmosphere (S.V. Veretenenko, M.I. Pudovkin). Solar activity effects on the equatorial thermosphere temperature profile (C. Arduini et al. ). Migrating and non-migrating atmospheric tides simulated by a middle atmosphere general circulation model (S. Miyahara, Y. Miyoshi). Planetary waves in the lower thermosphere over East Siberia (E.S. Kazimirovsky, G.V. Vergasova). The use of level singular value decomposition techniques for vector velocity determinations and its application to TID observations (L.C. Tsai et al. ). The spatial correlation analysis revisited (D.A. Holdsworth, I.M. Reid). Vertical and zonal equatorial f-region plasma bubble velocities determined from OI 630 nm nightglow imaging (P.R. Fagundes et al. ). Spring stratosphere circulation transition and mid-latitude sporadic E-layer (O.N. Sherstyukov et al. ).
